Along the Way to Rock Country

There is something very comforting about beauty.  It is a primitive need that yearns to be satisfied and can be difficult to define.  I read once that visual beauty was based upon mathematics…. it supplied the proper distance from point A to point B and some form of symmetry was typically present.   There is an orderliness around beauty that can be comforting.  It is always out there in some form for each of us.   For me, one of those “forms” is rocks – especially Oregon Fire Opal and Oregon Sunstone.  I can spend countless hours admiring their unique and startling beauty.  I love finding them.  I love making jewelry with them.  AND… I love wearing them.  But, do not get me wrong.  Being a rock hound is not just about finding “pretty rocks.”  As the saying goes…It is the journey along the way so,….

Trends in Jewelry – Statement Pieces

“The term ‘statement jewellery’ is drawn from the popularly used phrase ‘to make a statement’, which is what the average fashion conscious woman aims for.

It’s time to trade in the delicate baubles and co-ordinated jewellery sets for one chunky piece that draws all the attention and holds it – it’s time for the statement piece. Whether it’s a chunky necklace, a pair of bold earrings, a larger-than-life cocktail ring or a wide cuff, the focus now is on a single dramatic piece that needs no back up.”**

After I read through this article I began looking up trending jewelry and could see that fashion truly does dictate.   What I decided is the gemstones and jewelry we offer at, Gems of the Northwest,  align perfectly with the article’s description of the current  jewelry trends.  We offer Big and Bold stones and jewelry that are perfect statement pieces…

Oregon Fire Opal – Artwork!

Oregon Fire Opal is one of the, “To Die For”, gemstones available from the Pacific Northwest.

If you go to a map and find Southern Oregon, you will be in the general area where this Fire Opal is mined. Now, find the Oregon Cascades and climb about 6000 feet and you are pretty much there. The mountain air is crisp and clean and the digging hard and dirty…but oh so worth it!  Oregon Fire Opal is the most stable opal we have had the pleasure to work with and is the primary reason we choose to make it available in our gallery.  It is pure and clear, with colors ranging from an inviting amber yellow to a distinctly rich cognac.  It’s quality is worthy of many forms of artwork, by artist from all over the world…

Oregon Fire Opal Necklace

When the word “fire” is used to describe a gemstone, it is actually speaking about how light reflects from a stone. However, a fire opal is named so because of its actual colors. To look at fire opal, it can appear to be glowing, which may help to understand the long term fascination behind this gorgeous stone.

Oregon Fire Opal is colorful, stable, versatile and is a prime example of …..Gems From the Northwest.
